How to make a FAKE ghost video

27 04 2008

Lately, there have been quite a bit of media buzz with regards to an alleged ghost sighting video in a Raffles Place office building posted on youtube.

You can watch the video for yourself here:

They are uploaded by a trio called Jimmy, Mike and YQ who claim to be a group of students in a local university who are interested in ghosts. Coincidentally, they happen to own a website called “Raffles Place Ghost”. Piece the puzzle together yourself. :)

In any case, to validate the authenticity of the video, the omy journalists decided to show it to a special effects expert - our beloved in-house video editor, Mr Bill Loh!

You can see his verdict in the video below. To read more of Bill’s analysis and tutorial, you can also read the article on omy.

St Andrew’s Secondary School, Class of 4SE, 1996

26 04 2008

I had a class reunion of sort during a wedding dinner with classmates from St Andrew’s Secondary School (SAS), Class of 4SE (Science Engineering), 1996.

I had blogged briefly about this in a previous post. The groom, Jason (guy in black suit standing in the middle), is now teaching in SAS and had invited a lot of our former teachers to his wedding as well. It was nice catching up with everyone.

4SE, 1996

The guy on the extreme left with a mustache was our Physics teacher, Mr. Gordon Goh. Although it was ten years ago since we have last seen him, the dude didn’t seem to have aged much.

Most of my classmates are now either engineers or teachers. I am one of the few who strayed from the norm, working in the media line. Nonetheless, we still clicked just as well as if it was yesteryear once more. :)

Till the next wedding guys!

Sheep Dash! - How fast is your reaction time?

25 04 2008

sheep dash!

Sheep Dash! is a simple educational game available on BBC Science & Nature website for you to test your reaction time.

I tried the game thrice, and each time, the best score I can garner myself is as a “Bobbing Bobcat”. I have never been known to be a nimble person, hence I am pretty satisfied with the scoring.

However, if any of you can achieve the “Turbo-charged cheetah” or “Rocketing rabbit”, do drop a comment below and let me know it’s humanly possible to achieve the score yeah? :)

Wikipedia’s full list of unusual deaths

24 04 2008

Death Note notebook

Click HERE to access the full listing of unusual deaths on Wikipedia, all the way from ancient times to present age.

Some of the deaths described in the list is so strange that it seems only possible if someone had written them off in the Death Note’s notebook.

Here are top ten which I deemed as the strangest:

458 BC: Aeschylus, greek playwright, was killed when an eagle dropped a live tortoise on him, mistaking his bald head for a stone. The tortoise survived

King of Sweden, Adolf Frederick, died of digestion problems on February 12, 1771 after having consumed a meal consisting of lobster, caviar, sauerkraut, smoked herring and champagne, which was topped off with 14 servings of his favorite dessert: semla served in a bowl of hot milk.[39] He is thus remembered by Swedish schoolchildren as “the king who ate himself to death.

1912: Franz Reichelt, tailor, fell to his death off the first deck of the Eiffel Tower while testing his invention, the coat parachute. It was his first ever attempt with the parachute and he’d told the authorities in advance he would test it first with a dummy.

1923: Martha Mansfield, an American film actress, died after sustaining severe burns on the set of the film The Warrens of Virginia after a smoker’s match, tossed by a cast member, ignited her Civil War costume of hoopskirts and ruffles.

1947: The Collyer brothers, extreme cases of compulsive hoarders were found dead in their home in New York. The younger brother, Langley, died by falling victim to a booby trap he had set up, causing a mountain of objects, books, and newspapers to fall on him crushing him to death. His blind brother, Homer, who had depended on Langley for care, died of starvation some days later. Their bodies were recovered after massive efforts in removing many tons of debris from their home.

1975: Japanese kabuki actor Bandō Mitsugorō VIII died of severe poisoning when he ate four fugu livers (also known as pufferfish). The liver is considered one of the most (if not most) poisonous part of the fish, but Mitsugorō claimed to be immune to the poison. The fugu chef felt he could not refuse Mitsugorō and lost his license as a result.

1981: A 25-year-old Dutch woman studying in Paris, Renée Hartevelt, was killed, raped, and eaten by a classmate, Issei Sagawa, when he invited her to dinner for a literary conversation. The killer was declared unfit to stand trial and extradited back to Japan, where he was released from custody within fifteen months.

2001: Bernd-Jürgen Brandes was stabbed repeatedly in the neck and then eaten by Armin Meiwes. Before the killing, both men dined on Brandes’ severed penis. Brandes had answered an internet advertisement by Meiwes looking for someone for this purpose. Brandes explicitly stated in his will that he wished to be killed and eaten.

2005: Kenneth Pinyan of Enumclaw died of acute peritonitis after submitting to anal intercourse with a stallion. Pinyan had done this before, and he delayed his visit to the hospital for several hours out of reluctance for official cognizance. The case led to the criminalization of bestiality in Washington.

2007: Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old woman from Sacramento, died of water intoxication while trying to win a Wii console in a KDND 107.9 “The End” radio station’s “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest, which involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. She placed second in the contest.

Japanese P-Cup “Magician” Fuko (風子)

23 04 2008

Her name is Fuko (風子), and she is known for her overtly large, P-Cup pair of knockers. When I look at her picture, I wonder how she even walks upright.

Watch this video to see how she makes two mobile phones “disappear” into thin air! Freaky!

Nationalist netizens on MSN “heart” China

22 04 2008

Saw this via Hardwarezone’s forum.

According to the thread starter, liblib, Chinese using MSN messenger have put up similar “heart” badges on their contact names, in defiance of all the anti-China bullying in recent months.

There’s a more in-depth news report about this on omy (中国数百万网友“红心”护圣火) on 18 April.

I think this non-violence display of nationalism is a healthy development, regardless of stance on the issue. It’s much better than running amok on streets, burning properties, looting and endangering the lives of others.

Perhaps we can try something creative like this in Singapore next time when we want the authorities here to  hear our grievances? :)

How did Mas Selamat Kastari escape?

21 04 2008

Mas Selamat on omy

More details will be disclosed in Parliament later today. Visit omy for the latest updates. Following from current reports, Mas Selamat could have escaped in just 49 seconds. There were many security lapses such as CCTV cameras which were not being monitored, converging double fencings with a roof and the most severe of all, a gaping toilet window with no grilles:

There’s an interesting flash animation done up on omy to explain how Mas Selamat Kastari escaped. Do take a look and click on the individual poles to see the various images of the security lapses which have been publicly released.
