Who is Gloria Chee (徐诗韵)?

21 07 2008

(pictures via Smell of Rain official site)

According to her IMDB biography, Gloria Chee was a graduate from the pioneer batch of Film, Sound & Video (FSV) program, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, and was the first FSV graduate to direct a full-length feature film (Smell of Rain (2006)).

She’s quite a seasoned filmmaker isn’t she? :)

Do you know she is also the same Gloria Chee who was recently bombarded by netizens for ripping off a Japanese TV ad for a National Day Parade (NDP) video?

Initially, I didn’t want to comment on this issue as I thought she might have been some newbie filmmaker being exploited by the NDP committee for cheap labour and unreasonable timeline, given that she mentioned only receiving a honorarium as a token of appreciation for her work.

However, when I googled her name… no lei… Gloria Chee is not an amateur hor!

For the benefit of those who do not know about this incident, here’s the full article from my paper:

Netizens slam NDP video as Japanese ad rip-off

THIS year’s National Day Parade (NDP) videos for its theme songs have sparked off some controversy online.

A contributor to citizen media website Stomp, Daniel, felt that some scenes in the videos were copied from a Japanese television advertisement for The Children’s Foundation. He said that although the NDP videos are not exact copies, some scenes, like that of a child painting, seemed very similar to those in the Japanese ad.

Daniel said: “I think this is unoriginal and uncreative, especially for our NDP.

“I feel that any national projects should be original and not recycle concepts already done by other countries.”

NDP video is three minutes long and depicts various everyday scenes in the lives of Singaporeans, such as children colouring, a boy courting a girl and a man running up the stairs in a block of HDB flats.

These scenes are interspersed with those of Singapore Idol 2006 winner Hady Mirza singing the theme song Shine

For Singapore. Joi Chua performs the Chinese NDP theme song Qing Kong Wan Li.

Among others, Daniel pointed out that scenes like those of children colouring and paying attention in class are very similar to those which can be seen in the Japanese advertisement.

A video of the 11/2-minute Japanese advertisement was uploaded onto Google Video in April 2006.

It is stated on the site that the advertisement was created by the Japan Ad Council.

Netizens who commented on the post on Stomp mainly felt that it was the fault of the advertising company which had been engaged to create the video.

Contributor goolen2001 said yesterday: “National Day advertisement also want to copy other advertisement? Shame on you.

Goolen2001 added: “The advertising agency wants to earn money only. Lazy to use brain.”

Fellow contributor krankiepants said: “It’s sad to see such things happening.”

However, pbcjohn79 defended the video’s creators: “It is an honest mistake. Let’s move on.”

But jacksparrow2 disagreed strongly: “I think it is serious as a lump sum has been paid to make that video.”

Stomp has contacted the authorities for comments.

I love the last quote which was obviously a sarcastic potshot aimed at the authorities, as duly pointed out by Mr Brown.

Below are the two music videos. The first one is the original Japanese ad promoting a children foundation:

Here’s the pirated version done by Gloria Chee for NDP:

Who is Xiaoyun from Sichuan?

13 06 2008

Here’s a picture of her:

xiaoyun from sichuan

To see more photos of Xiaoyun, you can visit bbs.ganji.com. Who is this mysterious Sichuan girl who is posting up semi-nude pictures of herself online for all to see? Well, if you have been following the newspaper lately, The New Paper just ran a story about her:

Attention seeker or charitable soul?
Beijing teen posts sexy pictures online asking for Sichuan earthquake donations
By Liew Hanqing

SHE poses suggestively and flashes a megawatt smile.

Her plea: ‘Donate money to help my compatriots in Sichuan, please.’

Known only as Xiaoyun, the Beijing-based teen wrote in a recent forum post that she had decided to circulate revealing pictures of herself to ‘encourage people to donate’.

More than 100 photographs of her are now circulating online. There are also pictures of her posing in what appears to be her bedroom.

Her post has caused an online uproar with mixed reactions. Some have applauded her for ‘expressing herself’, while others have labelled her an attention seeker.

Since the pictures were posted online last week, they have attracted more than one million hits, according to online news reports.

A blog search with the keywords ‘Xiaoyun’ and ‘Sichuan’ yielded more than 6,500 related blog posts.

In the original forum post, Xiaoyun claimed her efforts were inspired by her affinity with Sichuan, her hometown.

She wrote in Chinese: ‘I am from Sichuan. My hometown has been badly hit by the recent earthquake. It’s encouraging to see people donating to help - I will release more photographs of myself to encourage more people to donate.’

About 69,000 people were killed in the earthquake that struck the province on 12 May.

It is not known whether she is personally collecting donations, or how much she has managed to raise.

‘I just want to give something back to my hometown,’ she wrote.

MIXED RESPONSES

Responses to her ‘donation drive’, however, have been mixed.

One blogger questioned whether the teen genuinely wanted to help, or whether the stunt was simply to help catapult her to online fame.

The blogger wrote: ‘These photographs look like they were carefully selected. She probably just wants to use the viral nature of the Internet to raise her profile online.’

Another blogger lamented: ‘It’s a pity that these ‘post-90′ (referring to the year 1990) girls are so shameless. Is this all they know how to do? What happened to their dignity?’

However, another blogger lauded her, saying that he admired her ‘willingness to express herself’.

‘It’s a pretty creative way to get donations - we need more creative people like her around,’ the blogger wrote.

Some were more flippant, like one netizen who noted Xiaoyun’s unshaved armpits.

The issue has also been hotly debated on the popular Tianya.cn forum, where Xiaoyun herself posted a response.

She wrote in Mandarin: ‘I would like to thank both those who have supported and criticised me. You have made me more mature, and given me a better understanding of what people are really like.’

She stressed that she had decided to post her pictures not for self-promotion or money, but because of a genuine desire to help the earthquake victims.

‘I urge you to admire my photographs from an artistic point of view. Womens’ bodies are meant to be admired that way,’ she wrote.

She added that she had seen most of the comments left about her on the forum.

Responding to several personal messages sent to her through the forum, Xiaoyun wrote that she ‘felt terrible’ and was ‘nearly in tears’ after reading some of the more hurtful ones.

‘I don’t regret posting the pictures - I only regret that they have been seen by people who cannot appreciate them,’ she wrote.

She added that she hoped her critics would hear her out before judging.

‘I hope that you will read what I have to say and change your mind about me. I am still willing to be your friend,’ she wrote.

I don’t know whether this Xiaoyun story is true or if she is being sabo-ed, but it did strike me that teens nowadays are getting more expressive on the Internet, with the world audience as a platform.

In this case, at least it was for an altruistic purpose, unlike the China, Liaoning girl incident or our very own racist blogger, Fragrance Prince. :)

Who is Mas Selamat Kastari?

28 02 2008
Mas Selamat Kastari
Picture taken from CNA

Mas Selamat Kastari, 45, is the terrorist who planned to crash a hijacked plane into Changi Airport in 2002. He is on the loose now, having escaped from detention yesterday.

A massive manhunt involving thousands of policemen and Gurkhas was launched yesterday to hunt him down. Mas Selamat is said to have fled the Internal Security Department’s Whitley Road Dentention Centre at 4.05pm yesterday.

Here’s the full report from CNA:

A massive police operation is underway in Singapore after the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah network here, Mas Selamat Kastari, escaped from detention at 4.05pm on Wednesday.

A statement from the Home Affairs Ministry says Mas Selamat walks with a limp and is presently at large.

He is not known to be armed and is one of Singapore’s most wanted men.

Extensive police resources have been deployed to track him down after he escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre.

Anyone with information about him can contact the police at 999.

Mas Selamat was arrested by the Indonesian police on Bintan island in January 2006.

He was picked up then for using a fake identity card.

Based on investigations then, Indonesia’s elite anti-terror police discovered he was the leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah network, a terrorist organisation.

They then deported the man to Singapore in 2006.

The 45-year-old father of four was also said to be involved in JI’s plans to mount attacks against foreign and local establishments here.

These included the US Embassy and American Club, the Defence Ministry headquarters at Bukit Gombak and the Education Ministry building at North Buona Vista Drive.

Mas Selamat fled Singapore in December 2001 following an Internal Security Department operation against the terrorist organisation.

The militant leader had been on the run after Singapore authorities discovered plans to crash seven truck filled with bombs at various locations around the island.

Investigations also revealed that he was the mastermind behind a plan to hijack an airplane and crash it into Changi airport.

When he was last arrested in Indonesia, officers found literature on bomb making on the man.

Mas Selamat’s deportation to Singapore two years ago was seen as a significant development in the close network of cooperation amongst intelligence officers in the region to share information on terror suspects and to defeat the terror threat.

The islandwide manhunt has fanned out to areas in Beauty World in Upper Bukit Timah and Goldhill Avenue near Barker Road.

Officers are also knocking on homes asking residents if they have seen the escapee.

Police have also formed a formidable blockade around Malcolm Park, near the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School. - CNA/ch

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a brief statement yesterday about the escape, saying that Mas Selamat walks with a limp and was not believe to be armed.

If you see him or know where is, please call 999 to assist the police.

Actually, I was wondering how did Mas Selamat get away in the first place… he’s unarmed and walks with a limp, how fast can this guy run? We seldom even hear of convicts escaping from Changi Prison, not to mention the Internal Security Department.

In any case, I hope they find him soon before he attempt any jihad actions which may harm Singaporeans. Read the rest of this entry »

Who is Ong Boon Jun?

28 02 2008
ong boon jun

Ong Boon Jun is a pimp who operates in Singapore and dubbed as the Most Suay Person in Singapore for his involvement with full-time national serviceman, Dave Teo Ming who had gone AWOL from camp with a rifle and live ammunition in September last year.

Ong has been sentenced to 6.5 years jail and 6 strokes of the cane on Monday (25 Feb 200 8) for not reporting his friend, Dave, to the authority even though he had ample time to do so.

Here’s the full article from Straits Times:

ONG Boon Jun, the co-accused of full-time national serviceman Dave Teo Ming who had gone AWOL from camp with a rifle and live ammunition, had every opportunity to report his friend to the authorities but he did not.

The 22-year-old was hauled to court for being found in the 20-year-old’s company at a Geylang hotel room in circumstances which presumed that he knew Teo had the firearm in his possession last Sept 3.

On Monday, District Judge Liew Thiam Leng sentenced Ong to six and a half years and six strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to the charge last week.

In passing sentence, the judge said the safety of the public and the security of the state could not be compromised.

‘A person who is in unlawful possession of a rifle will pose a security risk to the state and the public,’ he said.

As a former national serviceman, Ong was ‘well aware of the importance of preserving the security of the state’.

‘It was incumbent upon him to report to the police to ensure that no harm is caused to anyone after he came to know that the co-accused was in possession of a stolen army rifle. More so in this case as the accused was informed by the co-accused that he intended to commit robbery.’

The freelance pimp operating near Lorong 18 Geylang had known Teo, who had engaged the services of a Thai prostitute through him.

Teo, whose case is pending, went absent without leave from Mandai Hill Camp on Sept 2 when he took the SAR-21 and five rounds of ammunition.

He went home and retrieved three more rounds he had earlier stolen and loaded them into the magazine. He left home with the rifle in a bag and checked into Champagne Hotel in Lorong 16 Geylang the next day.

After assembling the rifle and loading the magazine in the room, Teo covered the weapon with some pillows before calling Ong for the services of the Thai prostitute.

The court heard that Ong knew about the rifle and Teo had even shown it to him in the hotel room, saying he had stolen it from camp to commit robbery. Teo later left with the dismantled rifle in his bag while the prostitute and Ong stayed behind and took a nap.

Teo was arrested that night in the third floor toilet at Orchard Cineleisure. Ong was nabbed the next day at 3.45am.

Ong remained expresionless in the dock when he was sentenced. But according to his father who saw him later, Ong was crying.

The father, together Ong’s mother and a cousin, declined to speak to the media.

Under the Arms Offences Act, Ong could have been jailed between five and 10 years and given not less than six strokes for the offence.

This guy is really sibeh suay! If a very good friend of mine AWOL and come find me… I will also be in a dilemma as to whether to report him to the authority.

Dave Teo is such a big time Sabo King! He want to steal rifle and act Rambo - also don’t need to drag in his friend right?

The last time I went back reservist in January, SAF made a lot of extremely stringent changes to weapon safety precautions, thanks also to Dave Teo.

Ong must really hate Dave Teo to the core now for landing him in such hot soup. If not for Dave, he will still be outside, pimping the services of the prostitutes under his care, leading a carefree life, “test-driving” newbies to the trade.

All eyes are now on the sentence of the Sabo King himself will get. In any case, it will definitely be harsher than what was meted out to his buddy, Ong Boon Jun.

Who is Edison Chen?

5 02 2008
edison chen

Edison Chen Kwoon-Hei is a Hong Kong celebrity, famous both for acting and singing. He is also the founder of CLOT Inc., and the CEO of Clot Media Division Limited.

Edison has been in the news a lot lately - all over China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore entertainment news. This is due to a series of leaked Hong Kong female celebrities nude pictures, said to be retrieved from Edison’s hard disk when he sent it for repair. I will blog more about the photos tomorrow. Let’s focus on Edison for now. :)

You can read more about him on Wikipedia.

I best remember him for his role in Infernal Affairs 1 and 2, playing the role of young Andy Lau. He’s very good-looking by the way - nothing like the photo you see above. The photo was taken from an apology video he recently released in response to the sex scandal. Given the widespread public backlash from the incident against Edison, I think he was trying very best to look as pitiful as possible to gain sympathy.

Here’s the video in full:

Said Edison in the video:

“I’ve decided to break my silence today and make this statement to the media and to all people involved in this strange ordeal. Recent documents being posted online have been intentionally hurtful and malicious not only to the victims but to our whole community.

“I have already handed matters over to the police and have been assisting them with this case from the first day onwards. Due to ongoing investigations, I am unable to comment any further upon this case.

“The lives of many innocent people have been affected by this malicious and criminal conduct, and in this regard I am filled with pain, hurt and frustration.

“I hereby use this opportunity to apologize to anyone who has been affected by this strange, strange ordeal.

“I now call upon everyone to help and assist the victims of this case. If you have ever downloaded any of these images, please do not forward them to anyone. Please do not send them to anyone. If you are still in possession of these images, I urge you to please destroy them immediately. Let’s help the wounded heal their wounds. I urge you to help the victims and not make anything worse.”

I detect the work of spin doctors here.

Edison did not deny the authencity of the obscene photos - to me, that’s an admission of guilt. The photos are real, and Edison probably was the one who took them. Instead, he chose to harp on the “malicious” crime committed by those responsible for circulating the photos.

Very clever indeed.

It’s the best way to win an argument in a gone-case scenario - you don’t have to prove you are right, you just have to prove OTHERS are WRONG (I learn this from the movie, Thank you for Smoking from the tobacco lobbyists).

Precisely what Edison is trying to do here. Don’t be tricked. Read the rest of this entry »

Who is Marcus Ng?

10 01 2008
marcus ng
Picture taken from Straits Times.com

Marcus Ng Yi Loong, 21, is going to the detention barracks (DB) for insubordination. Many young men get sentenced to go DB all the time, but why is Marcus getting so much media attention - including a front page headline on evening tabloid, The New Paper?

Marcus is a well-known child actor.

He is better known for playing the role of Aloysius, Phua Chu Beng’s son in the hit Channel 5 sitcom, Phua Chu Kang.

As reported in Straits Times:

FORMER teen actor Marcus Ng Yi Loong, 21, began his one-week jail term on Tuesday after he failed in his appeal to get his sentence for insubordination quashed.

The High Court on Tuesday upheld the jail sentence meted out by a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) court martial in July last year. He was also reprimanded by a Military Court of Appeal for being rude to his superior.

This is the second time he has been hauled up since he started his military service in September 2006.

Ng, who holds the rank of Private, is perhaps best-known as the rebellious teen in the TV sitcom Phua Chu Kang.

Ng’s troubles in the SAF began in October 2006 when his superiors at the SAF Medical Training Institute slapped him with four charges for offences including not obeying orders.

In February last year, while he was being investigated by the SAF legal process, Ng chased and argued aggressively with a 50-year-old woman Warrant Officer in his unit’s Operations Room.

A Master Warrant Officer, a trained Commando, saw the altercation and intervened.

Ng rudely shrugged off the Master Warrant Officer’s hand when he tried to calm the Private.

For this, Ng faced two more charges: one for insubordinate behaviour after the Operations Room argument, and another for improper conduct.

Last July, an SAF court martial found him guilty of these charges and sentenced him to seven days jail at the SAF Detention Barracks for each charge.

Unhappy with the sentence, Ng lodged a Notice of Appeal - a legal right for all SAF serviceman to seek redress - and was granted a hearing by a five-person panel chaired by Justice Choo Han Teck.

In the meantime, Ng was fined $500 for two of the earlier charges and acquitted on the other charges.

On Tuesday, Ng’s defence lawyer, Mr Wendell Wong from Drew & Napier, said a jail term was ‘the harshest punishment I’ve ever seen for this sort of offence” and urged the panel to quash the convictions or impose a fine instead.

But Mr Luke Tan, head of Military Law at the Ministry of Defence, argued: ‘This is akin to a case where a person is on bail. Has he learnt anything from it? No, he goes one up and goes after two other officers.’

‘It would be inappropriate to give a little slap on the risk by imposing a fine as that would be of little consequence to him.”

Some 25 people, including Ng’s mother, Madam Florence Tan, 58, were in court when the panel reached a unanimous decision to uphold the first charge and reduce the second sentence to a reprimand.

He appeared teary-eyed when led away to begin his sentence.

Sigh… after reading the report, I reckon Marcus would not have gotten all these unwanted media and public attention if he did not choose to engage a lawyer and contest his charges. Wrong move dude. You can never win the SAF.

Actually, all Singaporean men have to go through NS, whether they like it or not. Those who read my blog regularly should know how much I hate NS and reservist - yet I still guai guai fulfill my obligation.

True, there are some very unreasonable superiors in the army whom all of us would like to scream in their faces or throw resignation letters at - this is entirely appropriate if you were in the work force and all that is at stake is your own rice bowl and personal reputation. You have a choice.

For the army to function properly, choice is a myth. Orders given, just follow. The Thinking Soldier aspiration is only for those in the upper ranks and probably the regulars who have to fight for their career advancement. For NSFs and reservists, just follow law lor. Not like we are going to be stuck there forever. It’s not hard actually - just switch yourself into a robot mode when you are the army. Whatever orders come, just follow. Easy.

忍得一时之气,免得百日之灾

Take care Aloy, it’s just one week in DB. Time will fly pass very quickly.

Who is Htet Tay Za?

13 11 2007

burma boy
Pictures taken from The First Post

He is the 19-year-old son of one of Burma’s wealthiest tycoon, Tay Za. Tay Za is now one of the primary targets of new sanctions imposed by the United States due to his close link to the hated junta and is fighting to keep his millions. By cutting off Tay Za and other top businessmen’s access to sources of income that benefit the junta regime, the Bush administration hopes to hit the generals where it hurts most - their pockets.

However, Htet Tay Za appears to be disconcerned about his father’s plight or the situation in Burma. He is a student in the United World College of Southeast Asia in Singapore and appears to be living it up, judging from an email allegedly sent by him to his friends. The email, which has been widely circulated on the Internet and believed to be genuine, was accompanied with photos of him partying with pretty girls, saying: “US bans us. We’re still fucking cool in Singapore.”

The email continues: “We’re sitting on the whole Burmese GDP. We’ve got timber, gems and gas to be sold to other countries like Singapore, China, India and Russia. My brother is rocking on his red brand-new Lamborghini with hot sexy Western chicks… and I need another Ferrari to rock on.”

What can we say man… if the email is true, this guy is worst than Paris Hilton.

Who is Regan Lee Da Wen?

27 10 2007

evil regan lee

Remember this disgusting, fatty face.

Regan evil Lee

This guy is currently Public Enemy Number 1 in Singapore Internet forums and online communities.

Fatty Regan caused the death of a young sales consultant while test-driving a sports car two years ago. He was jailed seven months and banned from driving for 10 years last Wednesday (24/10/2007).

As reported on Straits Times Interactive:

Regan, 26, was originally accused of causing death by dangerous driving, admitted to an amended charge of causing the death of Ms Angelia He Xueli, 22, by a rash act along Upper Paya Lebar Road on Oct 29, 2005.

Ms He, an only child, died of multiple injuries about an hour later in hospital.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Imran Abdul Hamid said Lee, now unemployed, was driving at a fast speed in the open-top convertible with Ms He beside him when he failed to control the two-seater after negotiating a left bend.

The Mazda veered towards the right, mounted the central island and went to the opposite side of the road, hitting Mr Raymond Lim Tai Teck’s BMW car.

The collision caused the Mazda to flip over and upwards violently before landing and hitting the roof of a van, driven by Mr Chng Hak Tiong.

It is bad enough that Fatty Regan’s reckless driving resulted in the lost of a young, innocent life. To make it worse, Fatty Regan did not appear to be repentant at all of his bad behaviour after the accident. While waiting for his case to go to court, Fatty Regan continued to put up a posting in a car forum asking for advice on two high-performance cars he was interested in. A Netizen called Legendkiller recalled Regan’s identity. This subsequently led to many raging online debates.

Ms He’s father, Mr Ho Tuck Fatt, 50, said he did not know who would look after him and his wife with his daughter’s death.

“Whatever the sentence, it cannot change the fact that my late daughter is already gone forever. I am still angry with the driver…. I am also very sad about the loss of our daughter.”

Hey Fatty Regan - can open your eye big big and see what grief you have caused or not?

I can’t believe this fat, rich brat still have the cheek to go car shopping. I hope his times in prison will teach Fatty Regan a thing or two about the hard knocks of life.

There are many online forums discussing on this evil guy, here are some links:

In addition, here’s a not-so-objective video posted by someone called 369Fighter sending “regards” to Fatty Regan in Hokkien:

Who is Mocca Muscle Man?

12 10 2007

Mocca muscle manI am sure you would have noticed him in the funny Mocca.com advertisement if you watch local TV. Who is this muscle man who speaks with a comic accent?

According to a reliable source, he is a Vietnamese amateur bodybuilder. His name is Ben. Currently, that’s about all the information I can gathered about this quirky dude.

Oh, and you can buy limited editions of his autographed posters for S$68 each. Here’s the description on Mocca:

You’ve watched him on TV. Have a piece of him, well, his autograph at least. ONLY 5 posters available. All proceeds will go to MediaCorp’s adopted charities, Balestier Special School and HCA Hospice Care. Email us NOW and own this collectible!

I think Mocca really striked gold with Ben. His ad has been well-received in general and many people are talking about him. One of my colleague even told me she taught her daughter the word ‘muscle’ from the ad!

Also, the ad does not seem like a big budget production and is likely to have been done in-house. Whoever is the creative director who came up with the concept - Kudos to you! Alvinology salutes you for your creativitiy with all sincerity.

Damn… why didn’t we think of something like that for omy.sg! :)
