For our Chinese New Year reunion dinner this year, my family headed down to Pu Tien Restaurant (莆田菜馆) at Kitchener Road again like last year. The restaurant serves Heng Hwa (兴化) cuisine, which btw, is my dialect group.
This year, Pu Tien offered on their CNY menu, the Hakka-originated, Cantonese-modified luxurious delight – Poon Choi or Pen Cai. It’s basically a stewed pot filled with vegetable and lots of goodies like abalone, scallops, dried oysters, sea cucumbers and braised pork.
Eating a bowl of Pen Cai alone was filling enough for the evening. Yummy.
Here are the photos taken this evening:

These surfaced to patch the potential market gap if Google really pulls out of China as it has threatened to do so some weeks back.
You really have to hand it to the Chinese for their extreme form of entrepreneurship.

It’s a great way to usher in the new year with my colleagues, getting a bird’s eye view of the Singapore cityscape from the greatest vantage point. The dinner was a delight too, so was the exciting lucky draw prepared by our bosses, Chim Kang and Kuan Fung.

Note how the billboard has been “strategically” (not sure if it was intentional or purely coincidental) placed such that it seems Mr Mah’s upper body is super imposed onto the lower body of the giant God of Fortune (财神爷) statue behind him.
A fitting tribute to Mr Mah indeed – given that his Chinese name, “宝山” can be literally translated as “treasure mountain”. Also, Mr Mah has helped the Singapore government made considerable fortune through his COE policy as Transport Minister and now, his BTO, DBSS housing policies as the National Development Minister. 🙂
