Thanks to the nice folks from Marina Bay Singapore and the Singapore Flyer, I was given a pair of complimentary walkabout pass (including flights on board the wheel) to the Singapore Night Race on 23 September 2011.

It was a Friday night and the F1 drivers were having their practice races, but I have to make do as I have to attend a wedding dinner and was unable to make it for the qualifier race the next day.

I invited my pal, Mark along with me. He is a motorsports enthusiast and I figured he would best fit the role as my human encyclopedia F1 guide.

The Singapore Flyer is fully integrated into Zone 1 and 2 of the 2011 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix’s circuit, giving guests an additional unique viewing experience of the race.

With our passes, Mark and I were able to access the usually restricted roof top of the Singapore Flyer to get a fantastic view of the Singapore Night Race, along Turns 22 and 23. One advantage of coming on Friday instead of Saturday was the exclusivity and privacy. Other than Mark and me, we counted less than five other guests. We practically had the whole roof top to ourselves!

As the sky darkens, Mark and I headed for dinner at Popeye’s, situated within the Flyer complex itself. The restaurants and food stalls were all in operation, including the popular hawker food trail. I cannot understand why others would choose to buy marked up drinks and food from the various temporary kiosks instead of making their way down to the Singapore Flyer. There’s a wide variety of food and prices were controlled. I shall bear this in mind for future F1 visits.

Mark and I rounded up our day at the F1 races taking a ride in one of the Singapore Flyer capsules. Situated right next to the pit building, we were treated to a spectacular view of the Night Race from various angles, on top of the beautiful Singapore night skyline.

Next time you head for the races for the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, do consider viewing it from the Singapore Flyer for a different experience. 🙂
