Addicted to Desktop Tower Defense

Desktop Tower Defense

The reason why I have not been blogging much is because I got myself addicted to this online flash game called Desktop Tower Defense (DTD).

According to the website, DTD is said to be:

“a fun flash based puzzle / strategy game where you have to protect your desktop from invaders by spending money on attacking pieces and building a maze for them to follow. Strangely addictive yet stress relieving…”

I am not too sure about the ‘stress relieving’ part, but it sure is addictive! I got hooked on completing the stages when I first played. Later on when I complete all the stages, I was dead determined to keep pushing the bar for my own high score. It’s like playing Tetris man! Simple game, but keeps you going for hours.

The game play is much like the first generation World of Warcraft and Starcraft – minus the glitzy graphics and animations.

Oh, and when you complete your game, do add your score to the ‘Alvinology’ group. You can see all my high scores there and can compare how well you did compared to me. 🙂 I put my nickname as ‘Alvin’ (what else?).

This is interesting – a feature length film is being showed on Youtube. According to TechCrunch, it’s believed to be the first time that the Google-owned site is doing this.

I haven’t got the time to sit down and catch it yet. The whole film runs for 71:54 minutes and the Youtube link claims that the film will only be shown for “one week only”.

Here’s a short synopsis from the director:
“It’s about our lives. Being alone in a city, wanting to be in a relationship but feeling there are no good ways to start a connection and then breaking out of a rut, jumping feet first into something deeper and crazier than either of us expected.”

Here’re some short nuggets of information on the film, taken from the official site:

Awards & festivals:
-World Premiered @ Slamdance 2005
-Special Audience Award @ SXSW 2005
-Best New Directors Brooklyn International
-2 Spirit Award Nominations n 2006.
-Won Undiscovered Gems Showcase Sundance Channel Audience Award in 2006

Other Achievements:
-Really Didn’t Speak for 4 months

-Attended 20 film festivals in first 9 months.
-Launched video podcast the day the video iPod was announced.
-Video Podcast promoted by MySpace & iTunes.
-Over 1 million views to episodes 1 to 8.

Here’s the Youtube link – enjoy watching it if you have the time 🙂 (and do drop me a comment to let me know if I should watch it as well).

How rich are you?

There’s this Chinese saying that goes 比上不足比下有余 – loosely translated as “if you think you are bad compared to others; there is always another group worse off than you”.

Do you always think that you are broke? That money never seems to be enough? That there must be lots of others out leading a better life than you?

I do.

Which is why we need web tools like this. It is reassuring to know that my income puts me comfortably in the upper quarter of the world population. At the same time, it is a bit disconcerting to know that also means 75 percent of the world population is worse off than a simple guy like me.

Show me the Money

According to the site – I’m the 552,869,541 richest person on earth.

I will be the optimist and be happy with the figure. It’s not a very high ranking to rant about, but there are many others worse off.
