Historic Moment in World History as God says SORRY to Kong Hee

God allegedly said this to Pastor Kong Hee: “My son, Kong, thank you. Thank you for going through this. I need you to go through this alone so that you and City Harvest Church can be the man and the ministry I call it to be. I am so sorry, but you need to go through this by yourself, to bring a change to your generation.”

Wow.

History in the making.

The people who attended the City Harvest Church sermon that day were very blessed as they got to witness a historic moment in world history.

Five Quick Observations of the City Harvest Trial

1. City Harvest church members do not seem to mind whether there was any alleged misuse of church funds. It is alright; they believe in the Crossover Project and can easily raise more funds anyway.

2. The general public who are not City Harvest church members seem to mind more as to whether there was any alleged misuse of church funds. They do not believe in the Crossover Project and no, they did not and will not donate to City Harvest Church.

3. Crossover Project or not, Sun Ho‘s music career is a money sucking black-hole. Following court revelations during the trail, Ho is said to have lost more than $14 million in one album release.

4. Kong Hee stands by his wife. Dude, seriously?

5. Serina Wee is really hot:

The top two voted winners aptly round up a year of sexy news that hogged the news headlines throughout 2012.

Hopefully, we would see less of these in 2013.

Prosperity Theology – Tan Seow How on the importance of getting young people to “GIVE” from young

I saw this disturbing video via Lucky Tan’s blog:

From 01:00 onwards to 24:00, a Singaporean guy named Tan Seow How from Heart of God Church shared with a Russian youth church group on how he make use of children to bring their friends to his church and convert them, circumventing Singapore’s school regulation which prevents him from reaching out directly.

He went on to share with the congregation of Russian youths on the importance of giving and tithing to the church.

Some fantastic quotes from Tan Seow How in the video:

– “If you reach  the schools, you can build the church”

– “Whenever you have a youth minstry, you will always have a strong church”

– “When young people learn to give, God would prosper them”

– “You may be poor now but you won’t be poor forever, but you must learn how to give”

– “I wanted a church that is built by young people, even financially supported by young people”

Some screen grabs from the video, featuring many young people under 18 with their respective schools, number of friends converted and contribution amount:

Btw, the Heart of God Church is listed as an affiliate church to City Harvest Church:

“Under the mentoring of Rev. Kong Hee, senior minister of City Harvest Church (CHC) Singapore, and the leadership of Senior Pastor Tan Seow How and his wife Co-Senior Pastor Cecilia Chan, Heart of God Harvest Church (HOGHC) has witnessed incredible growth since its official registration in August 1999.

HOGHC started conducting church services in a small premise at Henderson Industrial Park. The congregation rapidly outgrew their premises and HOGHC shifted to the heart of the city in Dhoby Ghaut on 12 December 2004. It was a great step of faith considering the high rent for a city space, but God provided and the church grew. The premises soon became too small again, and HOGHC moved into Singpost Centre on 11 August 2007.

The uniqueness of HOGHC is its strength in youth ministry. Youths make up three quarters of the congregation; the church is youth-run and youth-operated. Senior Pastors Seow How & Cecilia place a strong emphasis on Christian character building, aiming to equip the younger generations with leadership skills and being trained up in Godly values. HOGHC also believes in academic excellence, having faith that youths can excel in their studies and serve God at the same time.

The church also accentuates the importance of family life, reaching out to parents of the youths, bridging the different generations together in the process.

To date, this vibrant church continues to change and impact lives through its weekly church services, connect group meetings, ministry, Bible studies and active discipleship. HOGHC has been averaging more than 1,100 people in its weekly services as of September 2008.”

Pastor Kong Hee: “Was Jesus Poor?”

Pastor Kong Hee from City Harvest Church quoting from the Bible and sharing ten reasons why he thinks Jesus was very rich:

Pastor Kong Hee on why “faith has to be backed up by giving”:

Clearly, prosperity theology. Via wikipedia:

“Prosperity theology (sometimes referred to as the prosperity gospel or the health and wealth gospel) is a Christian religious doctrine which claims the Bible teaches that financial blessing is the will of God for Christians. The doctrine teaches that faith, positive speech, and donations to Christian ministries will always increase one’s material wealth.”

The more you donate, the wealthier you will become. The more  you donate, Pastor Kong Hee’s wife, Sun Ho, can make more secular music videos like these two below via the “Crossover Project”:

I found an article published by City Harvest Church’s City News summing up the success of the controversial Crossover Project over the past ten years. Here are some interesting highlights and claims:

– God was said to speak directly with Kong Hee four times to “cross over” to the secular world and promote Christianity via his wife, Sun Ho.

– Taiwan’s Christian population has more than doubled, from a mere three percent to 10 percent in 10 years, thanks to the Crossover Project.

– The Crossover Project helped converted “Teddy”, a notorious leader of a gang and owner of one of the largest nightclubs in Hong Kong.

–  In Kuala Lumpur, Sun Ho’s secular concerts in 2003 sparked a revival in City Harvest Church Kuala Lumpur (CHCKL). Today, CHCKL is one of the fastest-growing and most vibrant churches in Malaysia.

– In Indonesia, people “broke down the doors and pushed their way into Sun Ho’s concerts”.

– In Singapore, Sun Ho performed 14 times over one weekend at the church’s premises at Jurong West. Over two days, 30,700 people came, and 10,140 salvation decisions were recorded.

– Twenty-five months after the Crossover Project was launched, Sun had performed more than 100 concerts to about half a million people, and out of that, almost 140,000 gave their hearts to Christ.

Based on the numbers from the article, it costs the church S$23 million to reach half a million people and  convert 140,000 of them. That works out to S$46 to reach out to one person and around S$164 to convert one person via the Crossover Project.

If each of the 140,000 newly converted makes a monthly income of S$3,070 (based on Singapore’s median monthly income in 2011) and donates 10 percent to the church each…

This gives an additional S$43 million in church revenue each month! You can get back the paltry S$23 million invested over three years in just A SINGLE MONTH!

Even if I based my calculations on the 33,000 church members that City Harvest Church currently has in Singapore, that works out to over S$10 million a month (33,000 x S$307) in donations. The amount spent on the Crossover Project is just two and a half months of pocket change to the mega church. Spread over a period of three years, it is probably a drop in the ocean.

I am afraid I am the one who DO NOT HAVE A SENSE OF PROPORTION.

Wow.

Impressive marketing!

If only there was an accreditation firm like TNS or Nielsen to back-up the numbers, that will give a resounding confirmation on the high ROI for every cent donated and spent.

A Sense of Proportion: What S$23 Million Can Do…

Borrowing from MM Lee’s quote on the need for us to have “a sense of proportion” on monetary investments, here’s what S$23 million (USD$18 million) can do:

Buy 34,964 sets of the new iPad. This is enough to equip every post-secondary students in a year’s cohort with a new iPad and still have over 5,000 excess sets, with change to spare.

Fund more than 63,000 children for their cleft lips and/or palate surgery under Operation Smile Singapore.

Fully cover the pocket money for 34,848 Singaporean primary school students from low income family for an entire year, with change to spare.

Sponsor over 42,000 children from poor, developing countries with clean water, healthcare, education and other basic necessities under the World Vision Singapore Sponsor a Child program for an entire year.

Buy 51% stake in insurance’s giant, Aviva’s subsidiary in Sri Lanka, Aviva NDS.

Pay our current Singapore President Tony Tan’s salary for 15 years.

Pay our current Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s salary for 13.5 years.

Pay Hollywood star, Charlize Theron’s salary for the whole of 2011.

Fund the “Crossover Project” for three years and attempt to make Sun Ho into a worldwide superstar.

I understand it’s all a matter of choice. Many long-time City Harvest Church supporters have came forward to pledge their support for Pastor Kong Hee, Sun Ho and the Crossover Project. It’s their money that was spent and if they do not mind, we should respect their decision.

For me, I think it is a pretty bad investment, both from a humanitarian stand point or from a business perspective.

“I can see the sun. I can see the sun with love.
我祈禱在每一天 都有一個夢想實現
I can see the sun. I can see the sun with love.
愛讓我的心裡面 出現了晴天”

– Lyrics from Sun Ho’s 2002 Chinese song, “Sun with Love”

CamQueen of the Year – PWND

Via EDMW. Recently, I observed a lot of little girls taking part in an online contest called “CamQueen of the Year” – whereby they submit two pictures of themselves, one before make-up and the other one after putting on make-up. Two participants stand to win $1000 in cash for the top voted and $5000 in cash for the top judged.

The forummers at EDMW started trolling the contest site last night with random, nonsensical submissions, including a submission to Fail Blog.

Below are two cruel, but quite funny examples:
